Send a thank you letter to the USFWS and DOI commending their leadership

COMMEND U.S. LEADERSHIP

Regulating the global wildlife trade to protect the planet’s most vulnerable species is a massive undertaking, and one that requires effort from countless driven individuals across the world. And the effectiveness of regulations depends in large part on the work that our national leaders put in.

Thankfully, those of both USFWS and DOI are really stepping up: Their tremendous leadership in preparation for upcoming CITES CoP19 will have a substantial impact on wildlife all over the planet. That’s why we hope you’ll join us in commending their efforts, and encouraging them to continue their forward progress.

Thank you for your outstanding leadership
Dear Director Williams,

As a constituent of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS,) I am writing to thank you for the United States’s incredible leadership in the lead-up to CITES CoP19 in Panama this coming November. Your sponsorship and co-sponsorship of several important proposals to include certain species in CITES Appendix II in particular is an important step in insuring the conservation of species subject to international trade, particularly reptiles.

In particular, thank you for the important proposals to include on CITES Appendix II, several native U.S. species that are subject to illegal and/or unsustainable exploitation for international trade–including the desert horned lizard, timber rattlesnake, alligator and common snapping turtles, map turtles, mud turtles, musk turtles, and softshell turtles. Across the globe, freshwater turtles are increasingly threatened by unsustainable and illegal trade, for pet, hobbyist, and food markets. Thank you for U.S. conservation leadership to ensure that these species are regulated by CITES and that they have a fighting chance to survive and thrive into the future.

Sincerely,
