Simple Tech: a Game Changer for African Coral Reef Fisheries

Wildlife Conservation Society Fights to Save Endangered Animals

Wildlife Conservation Society Fights to Save Wildlife and Wild Places.

When you become a monthly donor, you sustain our mission to protect wildlife and wildlife place not only for today but for years to come.

The Issue
Millions of people make their living fishing in small boats on East Africa’s coral reefs. These small-scale fishers often make less than $5 USD per day, money that goes directly to supporting their families and sending their children to school. Fish stocks have been in decline in recent years due to overfishing and local fishers have watched their catches dwindle. They need tools to help them track real-time fish catch data, to enable communities to make informed decisions to manage their fishing practices.

Solution
The answer? Smart phones – a basic tool most East African fishers lack. When we put smart phones into the hands of local fishers in East Africa, they can access powerful applications developed by our partners (Abalobi: www.abalobi.org) to track fish catch, learn about endangered species, track their business, and evaluate fisheries management options.

Support our work
Wildlife Conservation Society and Abalobi are launching an innovative project in Kenya and Tanzania to tailor smart phone applications for use by these small-scale fishers. We provide smart phones to fishers who lack the resources to purchase one on their own, train them to use the tools, and help them turn their data into conservation action and improved livelihood sustainability. Please make a donation to Wildlife Conservation Society today to help us empower communities through smart phone technology.

Wildlife and wild places are facing pressing global threats
— and your donation will go directly to help combat these issues.

Wildlife Crime

Poaching, trafficking, and illegal trade endanger hundreds of vulnerable species.

Climate Crisis

Changes in climate jeopardize biodiversity and the health of entire ecosystems.

Habitat Destruction

Logging, mining, burning: human encroachment destroys homes and havens for wildlife.

We stand for wildlife

For 125 years, WCS has been dedicated to saving wildlife and wild places, powered by the expertise and science in our zoos, aquarium, and global conservation program.

Our legacy of success now positions us perfectly to take on the world’s most pressing conservation challenges—the zoonotic pandemic crisis, the decline in the world’s biodiversity, and the climate crisis—with urgent and bold action.

We focus on protecting the planet’s most important, ecologically intact places with the greatest biodiversity and resilience to climate change. With your help, we can secure a future worth celebrating.

WCS works to save wildlife and wild places in 60 countries, across the ocean, and in our 4 NY zoos and aquarium
